Going Deep with Microdermabrasion (Jen,May 19, 2007)

Denial is a powerful thing. In almost four years of reviewing spas and spa treatments, several estheticians have suggested I try microdermabrasion. And every time, I always thought 'I'm too young, I don't need it', (at least that's what I keep telling myself!).

So when one dry, flaky, patch of skin appeared on my face late this winter, I made a desperate call to one of my favorite estheticians, Teresa from Oasis European Skincare in Avon, CT.

Hearing the desperation in my voice, Teresa fit me in for an appointment the next night for a facial. When I arrived, she looked at my face and recommended microderm. I was a little aprehensive but this time I just couldn't deny it any longer. So I agreed.

Microdermabrasion is not a traditional facial. There was no extended steaming or 20 minute masque. The entire treatment, in fact, only took about 25 minutes. Teresa first cleaned my skin, then applied an acidic serum to my face which was tingly. This serum was supposed to help breakdown the dead cells on my face and allow the microdermabrasion to really penetrate the top layer of the skin.

Within a few minutes, the treatment began. It felt like a small massaging and rolling vacuum on my face and neck. I could feel the tiny crystals working and the tool rolling along my skin. It was not painful at all, in fact, in a strange way, it was relaxing. Teresa told me that the tool and crystals were working to break up the top layer of the skin. Essentially, this break up alerts the skin that it needs to replace that layer with new skin cells, ultimately revealing younger, smoother, healthier skin.

I saw results immediately. That dry patch was completely gone, my fine "laugh lines" were no longer noticeable, and my face had a healthier glow. Most estheticians recommend having at least 6 treatments in order to maximize the effects.

Teresa topped off the treatment with heavy duty moisturizing lotion to boost the moisture in my skin. She also made me promise to wear sunscreen with spf 30 on my face and neck to protect my newly revealed fresh skin cells.

All in all, it was a high quality treatment that immediately remedied a problem area in my skin. I won't be avoiding these types of treatments in the future!
