"Thirty, Flirty, and Fabulous"    (Heather, April 1, 2005)

When I heard the line “Thirty, Flirty and Fabulous” in the movie 13 Going on 30 last year with Jennifer Garner, I knew it was a line to remember.  I recently turned thirty and when asked how I felt about it, I proclaimed that I was thirty, flirty and fabulous!  (Although I’m sure my husband would prefer I leave out the “flirty” part)

I feel fabulous at thirty, even more so than I did at 21.  Why?  Well, on my 21st birthday, I partied hard at a smoky bar, threw up all night and felt like crap the entire next day.  For my 30th birthday, my husband gave me the choice of throwing me a huge party at a bar with my friends and family or whisking me away for a surprise spa getaway.  The answer was easy, a spa getaway of course!  I have to admit, I was a little worried about where he was going to take me, but lucky for me he had a website called LetsGoSpa.com that gave him a few ideas of what I might like…

We celebrated my 30th with style and class at the Spa at Mandarin Oriental in New York City. It felt fabulous to be pampered at this upscale spa!  The Mandarin is located on the prestigious Columbus Circle and the Spa is on the 35th floor of the hotel overlooking Central Park and the city skyline.

We arrived one hour early so that we could enjoy the luxurious amenities including the vitality pool, the amethyst crystal steam room and the relaxation room complete with a calming fountain and breathtaking views of the city. My husband booked the “Time Ritual”, a two hour personalized journey that began with a welcoming foot soak followed by the essential oil “smell test” to identify what my body was craving that day.  My therapist then asked me questions about how I felt both physically and emotionally to help determine what services she would perform.  We decided on a detoxifying body scrub to help cleanse and purify my body as well as shiatsu body work to help the flow of energy through my body.

After our relaxing services, my husband arranged for a spa lunch that we enjoyed while sitting in our robes in the tea room overlooking the city.  The staff catered to us and we felt as though we were the only two people at the spa!  I couldn’t think of anywhere else that I’d rather celebrate this milestone birthday.

At thirty, I know more about myself and what makes me happy than I did at 21 and can now enjoy a better quality of life.  Discovering and experiencing new spas, treatments and the spa lifestyle has truly added more meaning to my life.  I feel healthier, less stressed and confident that I will age gracefully. Isn’t it fabulous?
