The Vibe
Tucked away on an inconspicuous street, Great Jones is the perfect haven for spa-goers to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, but still maintain the
New York
feel. The spa, located in the Village in lower
Manhattan
, tends to attract a young, artsy crowd. An impressive two story waterfall encompasses a vast relaxation area equipped with hot and cold plunges, sauna and steam room. The palm trees with alternating orange, yellow and green backdrop lighting promote a tropical feel, but quickly transforms to a city feel as you turn the corner to find a two story brick wall surrounded by pipes and adorned with an artistic mural. |

The Little Things
Great Jones makes use of color harmonics therapy throughout the spa. They accomplish this with fluorescent lights that cycle through several spectral colors of Chakras, or energy centers of the body. It is designed to stimulate natural healing. This lighting added a comforting and unique dimension to the both the steam room and the hot tub.
The Star Treatment
After just having arrived by train into the city, we were ready for our aromatic hot towel infusion massage. This started with our choice of an aromatherapy oil which was then infused into hot towels. These towels were applied to each muscle prior to being massaged which allowed the muscle to warm first. The brochure describes the massage as being deep; however, we found it to be more gentle and relaxing rather than therapeutic. Looking back, we wish we had taken the opportunity to try something more exotic like the Red Flower Sento Treatment, a Japanese bathing ritual performed with algae, bamboo and wild rice under a Vichy Shower and finished with a Shiatsu massage.

The Distinctive Element
The amenities, or Water Cures as referred to by Great Jones, are very unique. We’ve never seen anything like the two story waterfall. The River Rock Sauna is the largest sauna we’ve ever experienced, with plenty of room to relax lying down. The Chakra Light Steam Bath is one of a kind. This dark room is lit only by the varying chakra lights. Great Jones is also one of few spas that offer both hot and cold plunges.
What to Keep in Mind
Bring your bathing suit because the amenities are co-ed, which makes this a great place for couples… It is impressive to experience Great Jones at nighttime when the charka lighting is most effective…The locker rooms are fully equipped with showers and toiletries…The spa offers dried fruit, nuts, apples and a choice of Chinese teas…The spa has great hours, open from 8:30am to 10pm everyday except Monday.
